Sorting through the Emotions

Sometimes, life takes us on a rollercoaster ride we never saw coming. The past year has been one heck of a journey for me. From feeling like I had it all together while keeping the weight off and staying active, to facing a void filled with anxiety and fear as the pandemic cloud started to lift.

Life's curveballs included my family relocating, personal losses, and starting a business (and living) in a foreign country. As my stress levels grew, I found comfort in food, saying to myself, "A little ice cream will make you feel better." That moment marked my first lapse into refined sugar since 2017.

The consequences were immediate and visible as I continued to lose control: tighter pants, a rounder face, and the return of the dreaded double chin. My attempts at returning to a low-carb lifestyle were short-lived, often derailed by stress. This cycle led to plummeting self-esteem and a sense of defeat, with food choices becoming a source of shame.

Making the Decision

At 47, the worry about my health, considering my family's history of various health issues, weighs heavily on me. I love being a good dad and husband. I want to be present and healthy for my family. I remember the energy and vitality I had when I was living a low-carb life, contrasting sharply with the tiredness and negativity of the past year.

One morning, while eating gluten-free cookies for breakfast (ever happen to you?), it struck me: I had never fully committed to the decision to return to a low-carb lifestyle. Success in any aspect of life, personal or professional, hinges on a firm decision and a well-thought-out plan.

That was my wake-up call. I was ready for a lasting change. But the question remained: how to make this decision easily and ensure it sticks? I needed to find out my "why" and it came through addressing fear. Let's take a look.

Finding Your 'Why': Transforming Fear into a Lasting Commitment

In my journey towards health and well-being, understanding the 'why' behind my choices is crucial. The "why" is the core reason that fuels the commitment and keeps me anchored during challenging times. Now, as we embark on this low-carb lifestyle, it’s essential to dive deep and uncover the personal motivations that will inevitably drive this change.

Unearthing Motivations with the Worksheet

  • The downloadable PDF worksheet is a great resource to help sort through the noise and get to the real reasons. It's designed to help articulate and explore the reasons for choosing a low carb diet.
  • By engaging with the questions and exercises in the worksheet, you’ll gain insights into your goals, eating habits, and the deeper emotional connections with food. This understanding is pivotal in forging a path that’s not just about dietary changes, but about transforming your lifestyle.

Channeling Your Fears into Decision Making

  • It's natural to have fears and apprehensions about health, weight, self-esteem and more. I'm riddled with these fears and it bleeds into anxiety and self-loathing for me when left unchecked. These fears, however, can be powerful motivators.
  • The worksheet includes sections for you to express these fears and concerns openly. By acknowledging them, you can begin to transform these fears into actionable steps and strategies. This process helps in creating a realistic and personalized plan that addresses your concerns and equips you to overcome them.

Making a Lasting Decision

  • Making a decision to go low-carb isn’t a one-time event; it's a series of choices made every day. The worksheet serves as a continuous reference and guide, helping you stay committed and adjust your plan as needed.
  • As you fill out the worksheet, you’ll find yourself making a series of small commitments. Each one builds upon the last, solidifying your overall decision to embrace a low-carb lifestyle. This approach ensures that your decision is not just a fleeting impulse, but a lasting commitment.

By thoroughly exploring your 'why' and addressing your fears through the worksheet, you’re setting a foundation for a sustained and meaningful change. Let this worksheet be your guide as you turn apprehension into action, and action into a fulfilling low-carb way of life.

I've come to realize that earning their support isn't about issuing a family-wide mandate declaring my dietary changes. Instead, it's about opening a heartfelt conversation for them to truly comprehend the depth and importance of my decision. It’s about sharing not just the 'what' and the 'how' of my low-carb lifestyle, but, crucially, the 'why' behind it.

This isn’t just a diet; it’s a personal commitment to better health and well-being, and their support can make all the difference. By inviting them into my world, sharing my motivations, fears, and hopes, I aim to turn what could be seen as a solitary endeavor into a shared journey of understanding and mutual support.

Here's a small segment to help today with the importance of talking with family and friends:

  • Communicating Your 'Why': Start by sharing your personal 'why' behind choosing a low-carb lifestyle with your family. Explain the reasons that have led you to this decision, whether it's for health, well-being, or personal fulfillment. Understanding your motivations can help your family see this change from your perspective.

  • Discussing Fears and Vulnerabilities: It's important to be open about the fears and challenges you're facing in this journey. Talk to your family about the difficulties and emotional pain that being overweight or unhealthy brings into your life. This honesty not only humanizes your experience but also fosters compassion and understanding from your loved ones.

  • Seeking Support and Understanding: Encourage your family to be part of your support system. Explain how their support can make a significant difference in your journey. This might include making joint decisions on meals, respecting your food choices, and providing moral support during challenging times.

  • Creating a Shared Experience: Involve your family in your low-carb journey as much as possible. This could be through planning meals together, exploring low-carb recipes, or even discussing the benefits of healthy eating. Make it a collaborative and inclusive experience, which can help reduce resistance and build a supportive home environment.

Incorporating a discussion about fears and vulnerabilities into conversations with family about a low-carb lifestyle shift can create a more understanding and supportive environment. It helps in humanizing the journey, allowing family members to empathize and actively participate in the lifestyle change.
