Is Strawberry Lemonade Low Carb?

Strawberry lemonade is typically not low-carb due to the natural sugars present in both strawberries and lemon juice, as well as any additional sugar or sweeteners added to the drink. However, you can make a low-carb version by using fresh strawberries and lemon juice in moderation and substituting regular sugar with a low-carb sweetener like stevia or erythritol. This way, you can enjoy a refreshing strawberry lemonade while keeping the carbohydrate content low.

This strawberry lemonade recipe contains only 5 g net carbs per serving, which makes it perfect for low carb and keto diet. Also, if you're wondering if lemons are low carb, check out my detail article!

Strawberry Lemonade Ingredient List

Here is the list of ingredients you'll need to make simple strawberry lemonade recipe:

  • 4 cups cold water
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice (approximately 4 large lemons)
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled
  • ¼ cup monk fruit sweetener
  • Ice cubes

Ingredient Substitutions

Feel free to switch up the ingredients in this homemade lemonade recipe with these tasty alternatives:

  • Lemon juice: You can make a strawberry limeade by using lime juice instead of lemons. Please do not use bottled lemon juice as it is more acidic and will not taste correct for this recipe.
  • Fresh ripe strawberries: Use the same amount of frozen strawberries. Just blend until liquified.
  • Monk fruit sweetener: You can use natural sweeteners such as xylitol, stevia, erythritol, or even allulose. If you’re not low-carb, you can use regular granulated sugar. I use monk fruit sweetener because it is my favorite.

Additional Ingredients

Looking to jazz up your ice-cold lemonade recipe? Try adding these delicious extras for a fun twist:

  • Garnishes: This drink loves garnishes. From a bit of fresh mint (muddle some at the bottom of the glass before adding the lemonade over ice… so good!), some fresh basil, lemon slices, or even a stick of fresh rosemary, the herbaceous flavor is a nice contrast to the lemons and strawberries.
  • Fruits: If you aren’t a strawberry lover or they are out of season, feel free to use other low carb fruits like blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries. They are all equally as delicious!
  • Ginger: I’m a huge fan of adding in some peeled, fresh ginger to my lemonades. I have a rosemary ginger lemonade recipe that is just to die for. Anyhow, take a small piece of peeled, fresh ginger and drop it in the glass. Use the back of a spoon or a muddler and give it a good smash. Add ice and the strawberry lemonade… so good!

NOTE: These ingredients are not part of the original recipe for lemonade- use them to enhance or customize the recipe to your liking.

How To Make Strawberry Lemonade: Complete Guide

Making homemade strawberry lemonade recipe is really simple when you’ve got a good recipe to follow. Let’s walk through this together.

Cooking Method

  • No-cook recipe

Preparation Steps

  1. Start by slicing the lemons and juicing. This is the most time consuming process, but shouldn’t take more than a couple minutes. Be sure to separate out any seeds from the pulp. I also use the pulp as it gives the lemonade a nice texture. Add the lemon juice to a blender.
  2. Wash and hull the strawberries. Place in the blender.
  3. Add the sweetener to the blender.
  4. Blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute until the sweetener has completely dissolved in the strawberry puree.
  5. Add the water to a pitcher. Add the lemon strawberry mixture to the pitcher.
  6. Stir to combine.
  7. Fill some glasses with ice. Pour the lemonade over the ice and enjoy.

💡 My Pro Tip

One of the best tips I ever received was the perfect water-to-lemon juice ratio for a well-balanced lemonade. This same ratio applies to flavored lemonades too. Here’s the magic formula:

4 parts water to 1 part lemon juice.

So, if you’re making just enough for one serving, you need 1 cup of water and ¼ cup of fresh lemon juice. For a party, use 12 cups of water and 3 cups of fresh lemon juice. This ratio works just as well with lime juice, especially in my refreshing Limeade recipe. Give it a look, and then give it a try. It’s fantastic!

Another great tip is to never put ice cubes into the pitcher of lemonade. No matter what you see in commercials or ads, adding ice cubes to the lemonade waters it down, altering both the tartness and sweetness. This leads to a diluted, weak lemonade. To avoid this, keep the ice in the glass where it belongs!

⏲️ Time-Saving Tips

  • Juice your lemons ahead: You can juice your lemons up to a week in advance. Just store the juice in a covered container in the fridge until you're ready to use it.
  • Prepare the lemonade in advance: Make the entire lemonade two or three days ahead of time. Keep it cold and covered in the fridge, and it will taste amazing when you’re ready to serve.
  • Use frozen strawberries: Skip the prep by using frozen strawberries. They’re already cleaned and hulled, making it super convenient!

What to Serve With Strawberry Lemonade?

Strawberry lemonade is a refreshing treat, and I love pairing it with delicious snacks. Here are some great options to enjoy alongside your classic lemonade:

  • Keto Pepperoni Chips: Crispy and savory, these chips offer a perfect salty contrast to the sweet and tart lemonade. They're easy to make and great for snacking.
  • Keto Cheese Chips: With their cheesy crunch, these chips are a satisfying, low-carb bite. They pair well with the bright lemon flavors of the lemonade.
  • Zucchini Fries: Lightly seasoned and baked to crisp perfection, these fries are a tasty, healthy option that complements the lemonade's sweetness.
  • Keto Brownies: Rich and fudgy, these brownies are yummiest treats to enjoy with a cold glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade.
  • Peanut Butter Cookies: Soft and chewy, these cookies bring a touch of sweetness and nuttiness that pairs beautifully with the strawberry lemonade strain.

Storage And Freezing Instructions

Storage Tips

I keep the lemonade in a glass pitcher covered with plastic wrap. I used to have a plastic pitcher with a rotating top to keep things fresh, but those are hard to find now. It’s important to keep the finished lemonade cool and covered. It will stay fresh for about a week if it lasts that long.

Freezing Tips

This recipe freezes wonderfully. Whip up a batch and pour it into a freezer-safe zip-top bag. I place mine on a baking sheet in the freezer so it lays flat and can be easily stacked with other frozen items like soups and purées. The frosty strawberry lemonade stays in good shape in the freezer for about six to eight months. To serve later, remove the frozen lemonade concentrate from the freezer and place it in the refrigerator overnight to defrost.

My kids sometimes take frozen lemonade out of the freezer and leave it in a bowl on the counter to defrost faster—feel free to try this if you like. You can also try the ice cube tray hack: just take out the lemonade ice cubes and enjoy the drink!

Pro Freezing Tip: To save space in the freezer, make a lemon, strawberry, and sweetener concentrate to freeze. It takes up much less space and can be easily mixed with water when needed. Write the amount of water to add to the concentrate on the bag with a permanent marker. What my kids do is just take the concentrate out of the bag and toss it in a pitcher with the appropriate amount of water. Stir with a wooden spoon until the concentrate has dissolved. It’s so easy and reminds me of what I used to do as a kid.

Recipe Conclusion

I've been making lemonade my whole life—from the frozen concentrate in a can when I was a kid to this sugar-free strawberry lemonade made with natural sweeteners and a hint of mint as an adult. It's amazing how a constant in my life has evolved to fit so perfectly into my low carb journey.

This best-tasting lemonade is truly my favorite drink on a hot day, better than the store-bought lemonade. I love the vibrant color, the authentic lemon flavor, and the fresh strawberry aroma right before that first sip. The sweetness of the strawberries against the tart lemon backdrop is just so satisfying. I’m sure you’ll love it too.
