I've been enjoying this keto coffee recipe every morning since 2019, and it’s become a daily ritual for me. Among all my blog recipes, this is the one I make most often, and I'm excited to share it with you.

Below is the list of ingredients you'll need to make keto bulletproof coffee:

  • 1 cup coffee, freshly brewed and hot
  • 1 tablespoon butter, grass-fed or organic
  • 1 tablespoon MCT oil
  • 1 pinch kosher salt

Sometimes, you might not have all the ingredients on hand, or maybe you just want to switch things up a bit. Here are some simple ingredients that can easily replace the original ingredients in this keto coffee recipe:

  • Butter: I always use unsalted grass-fed butter if possible. It really makes the coffee taste great throughout the entire breakfast and gives the boost of energy you need in the morning. If you are avoiding milk fats, you can use ghee. The subtle nutty flavor of the ghee tastes great, too.
  • MCT oil: You can use coconut oil without any issues. If you want, you can also move into a specialized MCT oil like XCT oil or C8 MCT oil for an even smoother blend and potential energy boost.

Additional Ingredients

Over the years, I’ve experimented with various ingredients to give my keto coffee a unique twist. Some combinations were hits, while others... not so much. Here are a few of my favorite additions to this butter coffee (don't worry, they all align with the low-carb diet):

  • Cinnamon: This is a true favorite of mine, particularly during the colder months of the year. I just add one small pinch of cinnamon, and the drink takes on a completely different flavor.
  • Nutmeg: I reserve this for around the holidays when I am missing the flavor of eggnog and other spiced holiday beverages. Just a little shave of nutmeg goes a long way. Add in a small pinch of cinnamon too. Yum.
  • Pumpkin spice mix: Yes, in the fall, I do enjoy just a touch of the pumpkin spice mix. It reminds me of all the fun activities and tastes great. Again, just a small pinch is enough.
  • Natural sweetener: I’ve never really liked sweetened coffee, but on occasion, I’ve added ¼ teaspoon of monk fruit sweetener. You can also choose xylitol, erythritol, allulose, or stevia. Whatever your preference might be.
  • Heavy cream: I went through a phase where I was adding heavy cream to my keto coffee. It really makes the coffee feel substantial and rich.
  • Vanilla powder: I’ve tried vanilla extract in the past and didn’t really like the overall flavor. Then, I found some powdered vanilla online and started adding a small pinch of this delightful ingredient. The vanilla is a welcome addition any day of the week.
  • Extracts: You can try different flavor extracts or flavor syrups in your coffee, but just add them sparingly. I’ve tried almond and mint with varying levels of success. I've also heard my friend adding hazelnut flavor to his coffee.

How To Make Keto Coffee: Complete Guide

Making keto coffee is truly simple… and I’m going to show you exactly how I make it every morning. Here we go!

Cooking Method

  • No-cook recipe

Preparation Steps

  1. Brew 8 ounce of your favorite black coffee. You can use the Bulletproof brand of coffee or whatever you regularly drink. I do not use instant coffee as I have no idea what is in it.
  2. Add the coffee, butter, MCT oil and salt to the carafe of a blender. I use a Nutribullet because it is simple, easy to clean and doesn’t splash everywhere. If you are using a regular blender, be sure to cover the top with a dish towel as the steam released from the blending process will expand and come out of the top of the blender.
  3. Blend for 20-30 seconds or until really frothy and smooth.
  4. Pour into your favorite coffee cup and enjoy.

Here are some handy tips to make your keto coffee experience even better:

  • Start slow with MCT oil and butter: When I first began making bulletproof coffee, I went overboard with the MCT oil and butter, which caused some stomach issues. I advise starting with 1 tablespoon of each and gradually increasing to 2 tablespoons if you like. This also helps with hitting your daily fat macros for the keto diet.
  • Add a pinch of salt: You might wonder why salt in coffee? My Executive Chef at the catering company taught me this trick. She made two pots of coffee, one regular and one with kosher salt, and did a blind taste test with our kitchen staff. Everyone preferred the salted coffee because it tasted so much better. Since then, I've always added a pinch of salt to my butter coffee recipe. Plus, it's a great way to get some electrolytes in the morning.
  • Blend it for the best experience: Blending your keto coffee makes all the difference. I’ve tried mixing it with a whisk or fork, but it just doesn’t taste the same or have that smooth, frothy texture. Blending ensures the fats mix perfectly with the coffee mix, giving you a delicious, creamy drink without any separation. It makes the whole experience much more enjoyable as you don't get to see the oil in coffee.

⏲️ Time-Saving Tips

Here are some simple strategies to make your keto coffee routine quick and effortless:

  • Prepare in advance: I use a Nespresso machine for its simplicity. The night before, I filled the water reservoir, added my pod, and placed my cup on the machine. In the morning, all I have to do is press a button. I also pre-portion my butter into 1 tablespoon slabs in the fridge. This way, everything is ready to go, and I don't have to think or use willpower first thing in the morning.
  • Create a coffee station: I’ve set up a small coffee station in a corner of my kitchen. It has two outlets, so the coffee machine and Nutribullet stay there without being disturbed. I keep a small bowl of kosher salt, a measuring tablespoon, and the MCT oil. Having everything within reach makes the process really streamlined.
  • Drink from the carafe: Though I usually suggest pouring the coffee into your favorite mug, most days I just drink straight from the carafe. I have to clean it anyway, and it’s quicker in the morning. It gets the job done!
  • Cleaning the carafe: To clean the carafe, there's no need for the dishwasher. Fill it halfway with hot water and add one drop of dish soap. Place it back on the base and pulse for about 15 seconds. If using a traditional blender, cover the top with a dish towel to prevent water from splashing out. Rinse and let it air dry once you have taken out the coffee from blender.

I pair my coffee with some delicious low-carb treats to make my mornings even better. Here are some of my favorite food pairings for keto coffee:

  • Blueberry Pancakes: Soft and satisfying pancakes that complement the smooth, creamy taste of keto coffee. Add a dollop of whipped cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon for extra yumminess.
  • Keto Brownies: Rich and chocolatey brownies that make your coffee break feel indulgent and special. They’re great for a mid-morning snack or dessert.

Store your keto coffee in the fridge with a cover on it. The fats might separate as it cools, but it will stay fresh for about 5 days.

Not a meal-prep friendly recipe so I don't recommend freezing.
