Spicy Pickled Eggs 🥚

Sharing is caring!

My Spicy Pickled Eggs are a tangy and spicy snack that you never knew was missing from your life. They are an absolute gem for anyone who enjoys bold, zesty snacks or appetizers. As always, the spiciness is where it's at for me. The red pepper flakes and jalapeno peppers lend a tantalizing heat, contrasting the pickling solution beautifully. Best of all, the eggs retain their creamy texture, so you get a satisfying mouthfeel with every bite.

Pickled eggs are a fantastic healthy snack or quick on-the-go breakfast. I love to add them to salads to increase their protein content and introduce their spicy, tangy flavors. Let me walk you through the simple process of pickling eggs!

You will enjoy making this recipe for various reasons, including:

  1. Super-easy to make.
  2. Takes only 15 minutes to prepare and is ready to eat in 24 hours.
  3. A delicious alternative to conventional ways of cooking eggs.
  4. Simple ingredients.
  5. Great for meal planning.

Are Pickled Eggs Low-Carb?

Yes, pickled eggs that are pickled in a solution with low-carb ingredients are fit for a low-carb diet. Some recipes use sweeteners and added sugars in the pickling solution, but I haven't used any such high-carb ingredients.

This recipe is wonderfully low-carb as its primary ingredient, eggs, contain very few carbs and a high protein and fat content. The pickling solution is vinegar-based with a keto-friendly sweetener (erythritol) to keep its carb count as low as possible.

Spicy Pickled Eggs Ingredients

You need the following ingredients for this spicy pickled egg recipe:

  • 12 hardboiled eggs, peeled
  • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and slightly crushed
  • 2 jalapeño peppers, sliced (remove seeds for less heat)
  • 1 cup white wine vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes (adjust based on your heat preference)
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons erythritol or another keto-friendly sugar substitute
  • 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
Ingredients for spicy pickled eggs laid out on a table, including hard-boiled eggs, white wine vinegar, water, kosher salt, coriander seeds, raw garlic, jalapeños, red pepper flakes, and a sugar substitute.

Ingredient Substitutes

Substitute the ingredients you don't have with any of these top-tier alternatives:

  • White wine vinegar: Use apple cider vinegar (organic is preferable).
  • Erythritol: I like monk fruit sweetener, but you can use honey or sugar if you're not on a low-carb diet.
  • Red pepper flakes: Substitute with Aleppo pepper flakes for mild spiciness.
  • Jalapeno peppers: Use sliced poblanos or Anaheim chilis for less heat. For more heat, use scotch bonnets or habanero.
  • Coriander seeds: Cumin seeds are also a great substitute for coriander seeds.

Additional Ingredients

Use any of these additional ingredients to add extra flavors to this spicy pickled eggs recipe:

  • Fresh herbs: Add fresh dill, rosemary, or thyme for a delicious brine solution.
  • Reduce the heat: Omit the hot peppers and pepper flakes. Instead, add a teaspoon of black peppercorns and a bay leaf to the pickling liquid for a perfect balance of spice.
  • Aromatics: Add thinly sliced shallots or red onions for amazing flavors.
  • Vegetables: Add cauliflower florets or cucumber slices for extra crunch and variety. They give a deeper flavor when pickled in this spicy brine.

Note: The additional ingredients are not part of the recipe, nor is the nutritional value in the recipe card below.

💡 My Pro Tip

To ace this pickled egg recipe, there are some secret tips that will make this snack extraordinary!

  • As this is a quick pickle recipe, refrigeration is key. This is not a canning recipe that undergoes a process to make items shelf stable at room temperature. Always keep your jar of spicy pickled eggs in the fridge for food safety!
  • Leave enough headspace in the jar.
  • If your jar has too much liquid, add more peppers and spices. Use a spoon to add them to your pickled egg jar.
  • If you have a tight-fitting jar, layer the spices so they don't all sit on top. After the first layer of eggs, spoon some of the pepper and spices, then add the next layer of eggs.

⏲️ Time-Saving Tips

  • Buy pre-cooked hardboiled eggs. They come cooked and peeled, saving massive amounts of time and frustration. Plus, they are just about perfect every time.
  • Clean your jar ahead of time. It's crucial to use a clean jar. Ensure that it is clean and ready to go when the brine is ready.
  • Use an electric kettle to boil the water faster. Then, transfer the boiling water to the saucepan and add the vinegar and other ingredients.

What To Serve With Spicy Pickled Eggs?

Hot pickled eggs are well-enjoyable on their own but also great when added to salad bowls or served alongside breakfast or appetizer dishes. Some low-carb foods that go well with spicy pickled eggs are:

  • Cucumber Feta Salad: Slice the pickled eggs and add to the salad for extra protein and a spicy, tangy twist.
  • Halloumi Cheese: Pickled eggs are a classic snack. Serve them alongside the perfectly seared halloumi cheese as an opening act to a feast.
  • Stuffed Zucchini Breakfast Feast: Serve the spicy pickled eggs alongside zucchini for a fancy breakfast spread.
  • Tomato Feta Salad: This salad tastes a tad better with the extra kick of heat and tanginess from the jalapeno-pickled eggs.

Storage Tips

  • To maintain their flavor and freshness, store your spicy keto pickled eggs in the fridge for up to a month.
  • Keep the eggs fully submerged in the brine to prevent exposure to air, which could lead to spoilage.
  • To maintain the quality and safety of the eggs, always ensure the jar's lid is tightly secured after each use.
  • When removing eggs from the jar, use clean tongs or a fork instead of your fingers. The jar of pickled eggs will need at least 1 hour to come to room temperature, so plan accordingly.

Note: Do not reheat or freeze the spicy pickled eggs. Also, the eggs become more flavorful the longer they stay in the brine.

Recipe Conclusion

Spicy Pickled Eggs are an excellent addition to a low-carb menu as they are easy to make and ultra-delicious. I make them frequently and have a batch ready in the fridge for my salads and brunch spreads. Reduce or eliminate the jalapenos and chili flakes if the heat sounds overkill. If you love heat, you are in for a good treat!

FAQs

This is a matter of personal preference, but the longer the eggs stay in the brine, the more flavorful they become. For the best experience, I prefer to leave them in the brine for at least one week.

Yes, spicy brine eggs are delicious and have great nutritional benefits as they offer proteins, vitamins, and probiotics.

Look for these signs of bad pickled eggs: slimy, mushy texture, gas bubbles in the pickling solution, foul odor, mold or discoloration, and an unpleasant sour, bitter taste.

Yes, boiling the pickling brine infuses the flavors of the ingredients you used, dissolves sugar and salt, and sterilizes the solution to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, ensuring food safety.

    1. Hi-
So they can be substituted for each other very easily in this recipe. To be honest, I make it both ways and they taste fantastic! I’ll update the ingredients though- thanks for the the catch and have a fantastic day- Scott

I'm making these spicy eggs today and also noticed the typo. but it's all good as I added the Coriander seeds first. I have modified your recipe a little:
        1. Added a large white onion sliced into rings.
        2. I don't have any White wine vinegar so I'm using Rice vinegar and might add some apple cider vinegar as well.
        3. Added Habenero peppers sliced in addition to the jalapenos, and red pepper flakes. (My firefighter son-in-law loves the heat)
